Where were you...

Six years ago today I was living in Chicago but I was home for my grandfather's funeral. The service had taken place on Monday and that night I slept next to my grandmother in case she woke up upset or disoriented during the night (she had Alzheimer's). The next morning when I woke up, Tuesday the 11th, Nana was already out of bed and I could hear everyone watching TV in the living room. I could tell something big had happened but the only specific detail that I heard was that all air travel had been suspended. I jumped out of bed and excitedly ran down the hall - I was not ready to leave my family yet and this would keep me at home - but my mom met me halfway and by the look in her eyes I knew it was something terrible. We stayed glued to the TV for the next few days and I finally made it back to Chicago the following Sunday after a failed attempt to go by train earlier in the week.

Where were you?

I was in the Dallas airport. Obviously, my flight was cancelled.

I was in my car just pulling up to work. I didn't even come close to understanding what was happening as I heard it on the radio.

I was living in Fort Lauderdale, and was being trained for my new job. The lady that was leaving was in hysterics because she knew someone who lived in DC.
One of my husband's friend's daughter lived in DC and saw the Pentagon explosion in her rearview mirror on her way to work. She kept on driving and went back home.

I was in the apartment that Kelly and I had lived in together-now with a different roommate, Mary. She was asleep and I felt kind of bad for waking her up, but I knew that this was really important history going on.
