Being Blue (and Green)

Kelly, the title for your last post brought to mind a fun diversion at work over the weekend. As you all know, I have a part-time gig at a popular bookstore chain. As you can imagine, we are all nerds in one way or another - we have music nerds, book nerds, movie nerds, comic book nerds, both working for us and shopping with us.

A few weeks ago, two coworkers (minor comic book nerds) decided to make a list and assign each and every employee in our store an X-Men alter ego. (That was Version 1.0.) Their list was okay, but then our general manager got a hold of it and made it even better. He knows every obscure character ever to walk through any X-Men comic. He reassigned a few people and created a reason for his picks. (That was Version 2.0.) This became all consuming for us as the night progressed. In fact, the GM was supposed to be the manager on duty Saturday while I was working the info desk. For 3 hours, I saw neither hide nor hair of him and he sent other supervisors around to do the little manager things that came up. I thought that maybe he was in a meeting or taking care of some important book business. No, he was working on Version 3.0 of the X-Men list, adding former employees to the list and refining his reasons. This was pored over by each of us during our free time and even carried to the bar after work to be debated again. We love lists. Did I mention we are all nerds?

So the point of all of this is to tell you which character was assigned to me. I am Mystique. The reason? Professor X (the GM) wrote, "Is she good? Is she bad? Is she good? Is she bad?" >>>>>

Update: Found out during my shift last night that our GM has created another list, this time assigning all employees to a Star Wars character. I am Oola. I forget the reason. I think it has something to do with Oola being a dancer and me doing hula.

I feel so special to have received such an honorable shout out here at Apt. 5B. Wow.

Also, I feel that you and I are kindred spirits, Jo. I'm now longing to make a list of who's who at my work from any sort of character list... Scooby Doo, Growing Pains, Harry Potter, you name it. I am one with my dorkiness. And, I think Mystique is a great person/thing/mutant freak to be. Congratulations.

Jo, I have often wondered "Is she good? Is she bad? Is she good? Is she bad?" You are soooo Mystique. I think I'm Jean Grey because of my stunning mental prowess. . .

You make retail work sound like grown up study hall. Technically you're there to work, but it's so much more fun to play.

I'd take Mystique as a total compliment. She's attractive, mysterious, nearly naked, a contortionist. You're being told you're hot.
